A new night-time service as LUSU bids goodbye to the Sugarbus
More than a decade after its introduction, the Sugarbus will no longer run during the 2026/27 academic year. The decision follows the expansion of Stagecoach’s N1 night-bus service, which now provides additional late-night and early-hours journeys between Lancaster University and the city centre. Here’s what’s changing, and what it means for getting home after a night at The Sugarhouse.
Each year, the Students’ Union has invested tens of thousands of pounds to provide the Sugarbus service to and from The Sugarhouse on Wednesdays and Fridays.
When the Sugarbus was first introduced over a decade ago, it was an important step in helping students get home safely after a night out. Since then, it has become a much-loved part of the Sugarhouse experience for many students.
This summer, Stagecoach announced an expansion of its N1 night-bus service, with additional late-night and early-hours journeys between Lancaster University and the city centre.
A New Night-Time Service
This new provision overlaps directly with the service previously provided by the Sugarbus. With this in mind, and as we look to make the best use of our resources across the Students’ Union, we have taken the difficult decision to stand down the Sugarbus service for the 2026/27 academic year.
We know this will be disappointing for some students, and we would have loved to continue providing the service. However, we're pleased that the expanded N1 timetable provides an established public transport option for students travelling between campus and the city centre late at night.
The revised N1 service operates during term time, with additional early-hours journeys from Thursday to Sunday mornings. Buses will run from Lancaster University to the city centre and back into the early hours.
