LUSU Green is your home for sustainability volunteering, events and campaigns based in your Students’ Union.

Who we are

We're here to support your sustainability journey at Lancaster and empower you to help take action on the climate and ecological crises. 

Formerly known as Green Lancaster, the team has been engaging students in sustainability since 2005.

Our Projects

Get stuck in, get inspired, and help shape a more sustainable Lancaster! Whether you're planting trees, repairing clothes, or debating climate justice, there's something for everyone. Explore our ongoing projects and get involved by signing up to an event.

  • Help grow a space where nature thrives! Since 2018, students have been transforming old farmland and a golf course into a vibrant, biodiverse haven. This hands-on project supports: 

    • Carbon sequestration

    • Boosting biodiversity

    • Natural Flood Management

    • Community connection

    Be part of creating something that will last for generations. 


  • Explore stunning local and regional landscapes and get hands-on with real sustainability projects. Each adventure is different—but all are rooted in action, connection, and learning. 

    We dive into themes like food systems, climate justice, waste reduction, and nature restoration. 

     2024–25 Highlights included:

    • Save the Pumpkins with EggCup and Closing Loops 

    • Claver Hill Community Farm 

    • Fylde Sand Dune restoration with Lancahsire Wildlife Trust 

    • Fairfield Nature Reserve 

    • ECOTown waste site visit

    • Birdwatching at RSPB Leighton Moss 

    • Walking tour on decarbonisation & decolonisation 

  • Get your hands dirty (in the best way)! Help biodiversity thrive on campus through ECOWild sessions. We: 

    • Plant native wildflowers

    • Remove invasive species

    • Plant trees

    No experience needed—we provide everything: gloves, wellies, waterproofs, and good vibes. 

  • A night of ideas, action, and student power! This annual event brings students together for workshops, external speakers, and roundtable discussions on the future of sustainability at Lancaster. 

    We gather your views and create a Student Sustainability Report, shared directly with the university. 

     

    Top student demands in 2025 included: 

    • Expanding “Don’t Ditch It, Donate It” 

    • More affordable plant-based food on campus 

    • A sustainability induction for all new students 

    • Greater support for grassroots groups 

    • Rewilding the campus & Forrest Hills 

  • Take on a 48-hour sprint of creativity and collaboration! The ECOChallenge brings students together to tackle real-world environmental challenges with fresh thinking and bold ideas. 

    You’ll gain skills, build a team, and spark solutions that could change the world—or at least the campus! 

  • Celebrate sustainable living with fun, hands-on experiences based around seasonal festivities. From up-cycling to climate chats, there’s something for everyone.

  • Broken zip? Torn hem? No problem! Fix or upcycle your clothes with help from the Sewing Café Lancaster crew. 

    • Use our sewing machines and tools 

    • Get expert guidance 

    • Drop-in sessions each term

  • Grab a cuppa and join a relaxed, inclusive space to chat about the world’s biggest issues—from ethical finance to food systems. No lectures, just shared learning, questions, and good company.

  • Want to dig deeper? Join a society that shares your passion. Whether you're into growing veg at the ECOHub, campaigning for climate action, or running events, there’s a space for you.

LUSU Green collaborates with 48 organisations championing sustainability locally, regionally and internationally! Here are some great local, regional and on campus groups you can get involved in! 


Local Organisations 

  • LUSU Green - home for sustainability volunteering, events and campaigns based in your Students’ Union!  

  • Claver Hill - community growing project, located on six acres of land on the edge of Lancaster. 

  • Eggcup - Eggcup stops surplus food from going to waste and gets it to people instead  

  • The Bay: A Blueprint for Recovery - Nature and Wellbeing Programme, offering people around Morecambe Bay the opportunity to get outdoors and connect with nature  

  • RSPB Leighton Moss - RSPB site which provides shelter to a spectacular range of wildlife including Otters, Bearded Tits, Bitterns, Marsh Harriers, egrets and Red Deer  

  • FoodFutures - an award-winning Sustainable Food Place initiative  

  • Animal Care - animal rescue charity, rehoming 800 animals annually  

  • Sewing Cafe Lancaster - grassroots project that advocates for an ethical textile industry and regenerative textile practices. 

Regional Organisations  

  •  Fylde Sand Dunes Project - Enhance the nature conservation interest of the coastal habitats and as a soft sea defence 

  • Lancashire Wildlife Trust - volunteer to enhance nature and meet new people  

  • Ribble Rivers Trust - Lancashire based charity working to improve the River Ribble and all its tributaries for both people and wildlife.  

  • Lune Rivers Trust – An Environmental charity whose aim is to bring environmental improvements to the streams and rivers in the Lune catchment  

  • Restoring Hardknott Forrest - create and restore 630 hectares of native woodland and other wildlife rich habitats  

  • Wild Ingleborough - Wild Ingleborough is an ambitious, landscape-scale project working with the community to bring about nature’s recovery in this part of North Yorkshire.  

  • Wild Garsdale Pike - Wild Garsdale Pike works with young people giving them a voice and the opportunity to explore conservation and environmental issues and gain practical conservation and research experience.
