New Sensory Space opened in the Library

Written by Al Whiting, General Secretary of the Accessibility Community

A collaboration between the Library, LUSU and the Accessibility Community has opened a repurposed space to help individuals with sensory needs.

Just need to get there quickly? It can be found at Library A180 – Head in through the front doors, turn left once you hit the toilets, and follow it round to the room. View the location of the Sensory Room on Mazemap.

We’ve been working on this project for just under a year, moving from talks between the Accessibility Community and Liz Gillett, the previous Education Officer, to the first dedicated sensory room on campus within the library.

The repurposed space can be found in a quiet corner of the Library A floor and is aimed to help you take a breath when life gets too much. Inside, you’ll find bean bags and a rocking chair to give you somewhere to sit, fidget toys to help you refocus, ear defenders, and mood lights to help target the space towards your preferences.

The room is always open and accessible during term-time. If the space is busy and you require an alternative space, please speak to a member of staff at the Library Information Point.

While using the room, we ask for it to be treated with respect, and for no food to be brought in. Please follow all existing rules around behaviour within the library and leave any equipment you find within the room. You can find duplicates of many items with the Library Information Point.

Check out our Reel showing you the location of the sensory room here.
