Week 5 is This BUCS Girl Can week, a national campaign run by BUCS (British University and College Sport) designed to promote women in sport and encourage more women to play sport.

Over the last year the number of women taking part in sport has risen dramatically and for the first time ever the number of women taking up sport is growing faster than the number of men taking up sport. However, there is still a gap, currently 40.7% of men play sport at least once a week, compared to 31.7% of women. Of all sport coverage in the media, just 7% is women’s sport and of the total sponsorship to sports teams, just 0.4% goes to women in sport.

Vice President Activities Jack Walker, who is keen to carry on the work done last year with Women in Sport Week and the day of women’s sport at Roses 2016, said "While participation is rising, there is still a lot to be done to see the gap disappear and we will continue to support women in sports initiatives and through activities such as the This Girl Can campaign and Just Play do what we can to encourage more women to take part in sport".

This week there are plenty of home BUCS fixtures you can support, and if you are interested in joining a team you can find them here or take part in our Just Play activities.
