On Friday 6th and Saturday 7th May, Lancaster University Debating Unions Mackenzi Tse and her team mate Cerys Bradley took on 23 teams of debaters at the Baillie Gifford Oxford Women’s Open and won.

The competition was 5 rounds of 7 minute speeches. This competition was attended by many experienced debaters, with a very high standard of debate. Our speaker from Lancaster, Mackenzie Tse was in a composite team with Cerys Bradley (not from our university). They came first on the team tab (best team) and Mackenzie came fourth on the speaker tab (fourth best individual speaker).

The Baillie Gifford Oxford Women’s Open was introduced by Oxford Union in 2010 to encourage more women to take part in the competitive debating world after a lack of women debaters was identified.

Lancaster Debating Union have become famous for their regular Monday debates encouraging debate around some big and serious topics such as the EU to Making the Unbreakable vow with Harry Potter Society.
