Lancaster's athletes put in a brave team performance at Roses 2017, pushing York all the way as they chased their first away victory since 1985.

Although York were the tournament winners, gutsy performances from numerous Lancaster teams meant the dream of the elusive away win remained alive until the final afternoon of the tournament.

A final scoreline of 198.5 to 158.5 reflected how close Lancaster's athletes came to a historic upset.

Men's Basketball was the showcase sport in the opening ceremony, and Lancaster narrowly lost a tense match in the final minutes.

But strong performances from a number of teams, including archery, cycling, swimming and waterpolo kept Lancaster in with a fighting chance of retaining the Carter James Trophy.

Students' Union Vice-President (Activities) Jack Walker said: "I'd like to congratulate our athletes on an amazing team performance. Although it's gutting to have lost, we really challenged York all the way and kept fighting until the end - I'm so proud of everyone involved, and I'm sure it's only a matter of time before we get the away win we've all been waiting for.

"York have been great hosts, and I'd like to thank our friends at YUSU for putting on a great tournament.

"We look forward to getting our trophy back when Roses returns to Lancaster in 2018!"
