During my time at university I have been involved with numerous welfare campaigns and activities, particularly during my time on the JCR. I believe this gives me a good steading in running to be your Vice President: Welfare and Community. Below is a brief list of the main ideas I want to bring to the role if elected.
- Promotion and Improvement: To promote the welfare services on campus including the counselling service and NightLine. This will be done with working closely with college JCRs and student media to make these services more well-known and easy to contact. Along with this I will meet regularly with college JCRs to help with campaigns and relay information from the union to the students.
- Exam Stress: To continue to provide exam stress workshops, particularly during third term and hope to increase the number of session available to students. These workshops will provide a range of activities from more relaxation and preparation based to physical and sports related sessions. To give college welfare officers exam stress training so that workshops can be delivered on a college level as well as centrally.
- Mental Health: To continue the work that has been done around mental health in the past including ensuring that the university continue to increase the number of counsellors available as the student intake and population increases. To work with outside organisations such as Mind to create more of a presence of these organisations on campus as they bring valuable information and resources with them. To provide information and signposting about alcohol and drugs and how these affect mental health as these are issues that are often overlooked.
- Green Lancaster: To work with Green Lancaster and Lancaster Council to help to improve cycle routes to campus from Lancaster to encourage more people to cycle to and from campus. To offer students initiatives to cycle to campus such as free bike repairs and a reduced price on bike purchases similar to that which University staff receive. To continue waste reduction initiatives such as the reusable cups and discounted hot drinks.
