Do you want to be the STAR of your department? Student Academic Representatives (STARs) or Course Reps play a vital role within the University.
What is a course rep and what do they do?:
*Any student is eligible to be a rep for their course whether they are international, mature, postgrad or UK students.
*They talk to students on their course and make these students' views known in departmental meetings to ensure that the course is as good as it can be.
*They work with other course/faculty reps in campaigning on wider academic issues.
Potential benefits of being a course rep:
Skills - Public Speaking, negotiation, advocacy, decision making, organisation skills, team work, meeting and committee skills, problem solving, leadership, communication skills, presenting skills, time management, self management.
How to become a course rep:
*Put yourself forward as a rep for your course
*Ask your department about elections of you're not sure
*Attend the annual LUSU course rep conference. This year it is held on Weds 22nd October and Mon 3rd November
What can a course rep do for you?:
*Take your ideas, suggestions and improvements to department and faculty meetings
*Make sure that you get what you expect, and pay for, from your course
*Keep the University accountable to its quality standards
*Refer you on to people who can help you-whatever your problem
Contacting your course rep
If you have concerns or problems about aspects of your course then your course rep may be able to help. You can usually contact them by getting their contact details off the department notice board or online message board - your department secretary may also be able to let you know how to contact your courserep.
