LUSU Women's Group
The Women's Group aims to make a network of women who are passionate about campaigning on women's rights and issues. It could be that you want to collect a few signatures for a petition, or hand out a few leaflets to friends, or maybe you're really keen and have an idea of a campaign you want to run with the help of the LUSU Women's Officer and the college women's officers? You might be able to commit a lot of time or you may only be able to commit a smaller ammout of time; either way the Women's Group is for you! Email su-womens@lancaster.ac.uk for more information and to get involved.
Over the summer 130 MPs signed a parliamentary 'Early Day Motion' calling for a review of abortion law in response to anti-choice pseudoscientific propaganda and pressure.
The primary sponsor of the motion is Geraldine Smith (who also happens to be the MP for Morecambe), Vice Chair of the All Party Parliamentary 'Pro-life' group which is opposed to all abortion. A large proportion of the signatories are opposed to abortion and are supporting the call for a review as a way to pursue their intermediary goal of chipping away at abortion rights * particularly later abortion.
Other MPs have simply been confused by the debate and misunderstood that the push for a parliamentary review is being driven by anti-choice lobbyists not science or respect for women's needs.
It is important that MPs do not get the inaccurate impression that there is a consensus in favour of restricting abortion rights and that any attack on women's hard fought for rights would be popular.
