Support Students From Poorer Backgrounds

Lancaster University has announced a raise in tuition fees and accomodation fees are gradually increasing. Since the University has significant financial resources, especially from students, some of it should be re-invested in poorer students whose access to University is difficult because of financial hardship. There should be a review of all scholarships and bursaries funded by the University with the granting of any financial awards and assistance being limited to poorer students, from the UK and internationally. However, in keeping with meritocratic principles, those whose academic performance is highest should be awarded the most money. For prospective students coming from the UK, the best criteria would be free school meal eligibility. The British higher education system increasingly favours the wealthy and it is not fair if they get any financial support from the University when so many people are struggling. I would say no financial rewards for students over a certain income or depending on the level of funding, it being restricted to certain criteria such as free school meal eligibility. Refugees should also be given priority for funding.

Hi Harry, I think some of these are great ideas. As a petition is a specific call to action and you have lots of really interesting ideas in here, you might consider resubmitting them to the ideas section to be considered by the executive and possibly a student jury. This would mean potentially your ideas would be considered quicker!

I've taken your advice. Support the new idea, not the petition
