Backpackers

Many years ago (almost two decades in fact), a handful of members of the Hiking society decided that they wanted to something different: explore new continents, other worlds, alternative realities etc. and started the Backpackers, it didn't all go to plan, but the society endured. What this means today, and to you, is that we specialize in weekend excursions to areas of outstanding natural beauty. We very rarely do single day trips but actually prefer to camp out wherever we go and do walks from camp. We also organize trips where we drive to location x, put on our rucksacks and 'backpack' into direction y stopping whenever we feel like it, seeing some spectacular scenery along the way: the 'real backpacking experience'!

We travel all over Britian: exploring the Cairngorms and Glencoe in Scotland, Snowdonia, Northumbria and of course the Lake District, just to name a few!! Wherever!!! Though we have been known use campsites, we prefer to wilderness camp where possible (and more or less legal).

Ballroom Dancing is one of the largest societies on campus and offers all its members a chance to get involved in lots of activities!

We offer weekly lessons in both Ballroom and Latin American styles, with our highly qualified teachers, as well as practice sessions. It doesn't matter whether you're a complete beginner or you've been dancing since you were 5, we can offer something for everyone!

You will have the (optional!) opportunity to be involved in inter-university competitions, which are great fun, and encourage you to perfect your routines!
LUBDS also take part in Roses every year so you have the chance to get involved in one of Lancaster's most prestigious competitions!

As well as that we plan loads of social activities, including barbeques, themed bar crawls, London theatre visits and Christmas and Easter balls.

We are a fun, enthusiastic, exciting and talented squad, consisting of three groups: a dance, a cheer and a university squad. We train together and separately in order to perfect our own areas of cheerleading.
This Cheerleading society was first set up to support sport teams but has since developed to incorporate stunts into routines and has progressed immensely. We have taken part in several competitions and have been awarded trophies for our outstanding performances. We are constantly improving and trying out new stunts and intend to better our performances at each competition.

The Christian Union at Lancaster is run by students for students, and we meet every Tuesday at 7:30pm in the Faraday Lecture Theatre. At every Tuesday night meeting, a speaker comes to give a talk on the Bible aimed at encouraging us in evangelism. The meetings also include praise, prayer and the chance to meet with people! In every college group we also have weekly meetings of Bible study, fellowship and prayer. Our aims as a Christian Union are simply to know God and to make Him known. As students, we aim to pursue: Mission - Proclaiming the gospel of Jesus Christ where God has placed us, and to the ends of the earth. (look at our new area called 'globe' for international students too.) Maturity - Growing in our relationship with God as we submit every area of life and thought to the authority of the Bible. There are usually many events going on around campus to come along to, just one of these is the lunch bars in Bowland SCR, 1pm on a Thursday, where a speaker will discuss a relevant topic and free lunch provided. Closely linked with the Conservative party, Lancaster Conservative Future believe in the principles of freedom and opportunity for all, and with a vibrant and active membership, this ethos is at the core of all our social, political and fundraising activities. Lancaster University Dance Society aims to give everyone of all dancing levels and abilities, the opportunity to experience different types of dance. We meet every Wednesday evening in the Minor Hall (above the Great Hall) from 6pm to 8pm. Each week involves a lesson in a different style of dance, ranging from Ballet and Hip Hop to Irish, Indian and Salsa. Membership for the Dance Society is £3 for the whole year and each 2 hour weekly class costs just £2. We offer our members the chance to perform at several different locations including at the annual Charity Ball held in the Great Hall, competitions at other universities and performances in the local community. There are opportunities for those members who are particularly creative to choreograph routines for our performances and competitions in a wide variety of dance styles. We also organise regular socials, with past events including ice skating, a day trip to Chester Zoo and Dance Society Christmas Party in Hustle. We aim to give everyone the chance to have fun and experiment with different dance styles, while giving you the opportunity to meet new people and make new friends through dancing, socials and the experience of being a member of a society.

Lancaster University Debating Society (LUDS) is a friendly society for people who want to speak (and listen!) to topical and not so topical motions. From fun motiions such as \"This House believes there nothing quite like a Mc Donald's.\" To more serious debate over issues such as North Korea.

Debates take place each Monday for an hour in an informal atmosphere. Anyone interested can also get involved in Inter-Varsity debating against other Universities such as Glasgow, Newcastle, Oxford, Cambridge. These competitions take place around the UK and the past year alone has seen us visit Glasgow, Durham, The London School of Economics, Manchester and Newcastle.

Novice? Well don't worry! We have training sessions too, to learn about debating and judging which take place in Bowland SCR, 3-5pm on Wednesdays.

Debating is here for everyone even if you just want to watch and have a chat in the bar after so come on down�
The debate starts at 7pm and last till 8pm with your questions in-between. Afterwards we head to Fylde bar for a few drinks!

The Lancaster University Engineering Society is a light hearted activity for all University students with an interest in the field, but who are not required to be enrolled on an Engineering course. The Society has regular socials to which all members are welcome. Also, competitions are held each term where students may show off their engineering abilities, and capability to work in teams. The Society offers a Peer Support programme where Engineering knowledge can be freely exchanged, the objective behind this idea is for students to consult each other on areas they find difficult and for a variety of suitable solutions be provided. This would therefore firstly answer the question asked but also improve the repliers understanding of the subject and help with revision techniques. Field Trips will be arranged during the course of the year to various industries and places of interest, Speakers will also be invited to student conferences where they will give a presentation on their work and give the opportunity for students to ask questions on their experience in industry.

The Lancaster University Freefall Society has only really taken off in the last year or so and we are pleased to have around 60 members at present. We offer students the chance to become fully qualified solo skydivers for the lowest price possible. We offer an introductory course, after which jumps are just £27, which includes all progression training, gear hire and your plane slot. We have 6 fully qualified skydivers at present, some of which are training in formation skydiving, we are suitable for the complete beginner right through to the fully experienced skydivers. We are one of the most progressive societies at Lancaster University and this provides you with an immense sense of achievement as you pass through the system, slowly jumping from greater and greater heights. So if you are a complete adrenalin junkie after your next thrill, someone who doesn't know quite what to spend some of their loan on, but who wants something impressive to include in your list of achievements or you just want to prove to yourself and your mates you have what it takes to throw yourself out of a plane, we are the society to join! Regular socials, plenty of skydiving and a great sense of community both within the club and at the local dropzone, will guarantee a warm welcome and lots and lots of fun....

LUMAS, the Lancaster University Manga and Anime Society, is dedicated to the screening and reading of manga (Japanese comics) and anime (Japanese animation). Every Wednesday from 2.00pm to 5pm in the Chaiplancy Centre Quiet Room, and every Saturday from 2pm to 6pm in Furness LT 1 we show anime of many varieties, such as romance, fantasy, horror, science fiction, action/adventure and comedy. This way, there's bound to be something for everybody to enjoy :D. We also often accept requests for particular anime to be shown. Membership is free! We also posses a Manga library of over 200 volumes; a library card costs only £3.50 for the entire year! To join us simply come along to a meeting and speak to the exec or email us.

Lancaster University Running Club aims to promote running as a sport and support those who are already part of it. We meet twice a week during term time.

Whether you've never run before, or are a seasoned marathon runner, you're more than welcome and our club will support you.

Running sessions are managed according to three ability groups known as 'Beginners', 'Intermediates' and 'Advanced'. These ability groups develop members' running skills, techniques and enjoyment with other like minded runners in the same ability group.

We also organise group events to participate in local and national races of all distances.

The Senior Learners Programme offers a wide range of learning modules each of 5 or 10 weeks duration. Some accredited and some purely for pleasure. All aimed at the more mature learner.

Lunchtime talks by speakers from across the whole university aim to keep us informed as to latest developments in other departments and also keep us up to date with study opportunities.

Lancaster SSAGO (Student Scout And Guide Organisation) is part of National SSAGO and affiliated with the North West Network. We take part in a wide range of activities from camps to bar crawls, bowling to craft. We also help out at local scout and guide units. The Sub-Aqua Club arrange regular diving trips around the UK, and occasionally overseas. During the winter months these are restricted to the relatively sheltered sea lochs of Scotland and inland sites such as Capernwray Quarry and the Lake District. During the Summer we try to get out as much as possible and dive off the South & East Coasts of England and also Anglesey, to name but a few.
Each year we run the BSAC Ocean Diver Course for new members. This begins in October. If there is sufficient demand we can organise further training, such as Sports Diver or Dive Leader Courses. These usually take place later on in the Lent term.
Although we can only take trainees at the start of the Michaelmas term, ALL qualified divers are welcome to join our club at any time, with any level of experience, from any training organisation! If you have never dived in the UK before then come and try it, you may be surprised!
Along with organised diving activities there are frequent social events around the Lancaster area.
Meeting Details
The Sub-Aqua Club meets in Furness Bar on Monday evenings during term time from between 8 and 9pm. We can usually be found in the Back Bar.
Out of term time some members continue to meet but the venue may change.
Taekwondo

Taekwondo is a South Korean Martial art with emphasis on high gymnastics kicks and spins. LUTKD teaches the WTF style (the version of Taekwondo seen in the Olympic games) and as such is geared more towards a fast and fluid fighting style rather than achievement of inner nirvana. Taekwondo practise can dramatically increase your fitness, flexibility and self-confidence. Because we use our legs so much, you will burn the beer off faster than you can put it on - useful considering our social calendar. More importantly, being as we are the biggest martial arts club at Lancaster, you will meet a whole shedload of people and have even more opportunity to get wasted.

In LUTG we aim to provide an experience of theatre for our members through productions, workshops and socials. We aim to put on 9 shows a year (3 per term), all of which are directed by, produced by, managed by and techied by our members. From Shakespeare to Tennessee Williams, musicals to farce - we've got it covered!
Aside from the shows we try to provide an activity every week, alternating between workshops and socials. Scriptwriting, stage fighting and audition workshops are some of our most popular whilst our social secs will keep you entertained with quizzes, bar crawls and the legendary nights down by the duck pond!

The Trampolining society is a fun, friendly and welcoming society. For those of you with a competitive edge, our society competes in various competitions throughout the UK and Ireland. The LUNICEF society was established last year with its main aim is to spread awareness of UNICEF's work and help raise funds for UNICEF. As the name suggests, we try not to take ourselves too seriously! Last year we held events where volunteers were sold as slaves and jailed and we organised live music on Alex Square! Even though we have a serious message and cause, we believe in doing things which extraordinary yet brilliant. So, join us if you are interested in having fun while helping a good cause just email us. If you are unsure about becoming members, just come and join us when we hold one of our events, we strongly believe in the philosophy the more the merrier!

The Chinese martial art Wing Chun Kung Fu is not your stereotypical style of kung fu. Unlike the old Kung Fu fighting systems, which tended to mimic the motions of animals and lead to elaborate fighting positions, Wing Chun stressed efficiency of movement and simplicity. This makes it an exceptionally effective form of self defence for people of all sizes.
Wing Chun is a friendly society, so it is a great place to meet new people and learn to defend yourself and therefore boost your confidence. Please look at our website which has our training details on. If you're interested we take new members all year, so come along and see what you think.
Writers Guild

The Lancaster University Writers Guild attempts to provide a relaxed and communal atmosphere in which to write (poems, fiction, novels, short stories, screen plays, song lyrics, monologues, essays, comics, etc�) and have your work constructively critiqued by other members. Our aim is to help members get published, although those who write for fun are just as well catered for.
The Guild is independent from the Creative Writing department, and we welcome any students as members, regardless of experience or genre. Creative Writing students can also benefit from putting work through both the department and the Guild, thus getting a wider range of responses.
We meet every Tuesday at 5:30pm and Friday at 5:30pm in Bowland SCR. If you can't make it to either of these meetings it's not a problem, you can post your work on our facebook group and it will get critiqued online.
