Grad Ball is a totally standalone not-for-profit event and every penny of your ticket price is spent on it.
We know that there’s an appetite among Lancaster students to have a high-quality Grad Ball with great live entertainment. We could run a cheaper event, but that would mean we couldn’t offer the great acts that we do.
Please see the breakdown below for an indication of how the money is spent.
Any money we receive that exceeds anticipated budgets is used to add attractions to the event.
The price of a standard ticket roughly breaks down as:
The challenge of running an event like the Grad Ball is finding a venue large enough for the number of people who want to attend. This year we looked into other venues that were big enough but needed a lot of decoration which would have increased the ticket price, or venues which were just too small. Blackpool Tower is one of the biggest and most prestigious venues in the North West and is one of the only venues that can offer the facilities we need in a cost-effective way.
Can I bring a plus one?
Yes. As long as the partner or friend you wish to bring along as purchased a ticket they are more than welcome.
Feedback we’ve received from guests is that great entertainment is more important to them than a three course meal. We’ve explored the option of including food, but it would increase ticket prices by around £32. At the tower you get the opportunity to choose your own meal at lower prices in the food court.
Many people choose to make their own way to the event and so we sell bus tickets separately to give you the choice. Last year, 400 people chose not to buy a bus ticket.
Booking a bigger act would make the event too expensive to run. For instance, a big name band like Clean Bandit at an event this size would make the tickets around £50 more expensive.
Why have we chosen the acts we have chosen?
This year, to make sure we really understood what you wanted from Grad Ball we did a lot of research. This included stalls in the square where we talked to a wide variety of students face to face, questions in Squeak, an email survey and we have put together a Grad Ball Jury which was open to anyone and advertised on social media and in Squeak.
Blackpool Tower is aware that this is a student event, and we negotiate a deal with the owners to ensure that prices remain affordable. Last year’s prices were £3 for a pint, £3-4 for doubles with mixer, varying prices on shots, and £10 per bottle of house wine. This year’s prices will be similar and will be announced in due course.
