Campaigning work by the NUS and various students' unions around the country has resulted in a change the government's Higher Education and Research Bill.

The Bill proposes the introduction of a new Office for Students to oversee university funding, check teaching quality and support support social mobility - a plan that attracted criticism for failing to include a student representive.

But an amendment to the bill announced today will require that at least one ordinary member of the new oversight body will be someone with experience of representing and promoting the interests of students.

Lancaster University Students' Union Vice-President (Campaigns & Communications) Rachel Hughes said: "We are incredibly happy to tell you that the government has accepted an amendment to the Higher Education and Research Bill submitted and championed by the student movement!

"We have been lobbying MPs asking them to consider this amendment and are pleased to report that it has been accepted. There will now be a student representative sitting on the Office for Students!

"We are championing other changes to the bill while amendments are being considered, and we are still asking for you to get in touch with your views about the bill."
