Two graduates have landed jobs in the media industry within weeks of leaving university thanks to the experience they gained working as part of our student media teams.

Josh Hodgson (pictured left) and Tom Jenkinson used technical and creative skills developed on LA1:TV and Bailrigg FM to get their careers off the ground just weeks after graduation.

Former LA1:TV station manager and Bailrigg FM technician Josh has landed a two-year broadcast engineering  traineeship with the BBC. Alongside placements, he’ll be studying for a master’s degree in digital broadcast technology at Birmingham City University.

He said: “Having experience with student media was what inspired me to apply for the job and was definitely a factor in getting me to the interview stage.

“Being able to talk about large scale events was something nobody else could do. Lancaster University Students’ Union gave me these opportunities.”

Meanwhile, Tom (pictured right) is moving to Berlin to become a web streaming engineer with strweaming audio service SoundCloud.

The role will involve working with new and upcoming features in web browsers on PC and mobile devices to support the streaming of audio to SoundCloud's millions of global listeners.

He said: “My experience gained being a part of LA1:TV was really valuable, and the projects I've worked on there gave me plenty to discuss at the interviews.”
