Statement on tuition fee increases

Lancaster University Students’ Union is disappointed by the university’s decision to increase tuition fees for new and some existing undergraduate students this autumn.

The union has long-standing policy to fight for free education, but our more serious immediate concern is that this year’s increase marks the arrival of annual fee increases, a development we are fundamentally opposed to.

The Government’s policy of making it possible for high-performing universities like Lancaster to charge more for degrees means people from low-income backgrounds face a new barrier to lifting themselves out of poverty. We continue to lobby the Government to abandon this policy, which we believe will increase social division by making the best education and therefore the best employment opportunities accessible only to people from higher-income households.

We have asked university management for a detailed breakdown of how the additional funds raised by this fee increase will be spent and we have made it clear that the union will be paying close attention to levels of investment in services that contribute to ensuring that our members are able to perform at their best academically.

Students who are concerned about the impact of fees increases can contact our advice service by emailing advice@lusu.co.uk
