Overseas awards

Lancaster University Students' Union Overseas has won the NUS Internationalised Students' Union of the Year award at NUS International Awards 2016.

LUSU Overseas presents many opportunities for students to appreciate and be immersed in culture on campus and abroad.

The overseas travel opportunities that we have developed allow students to travel for 2 to 3 weeks to one of our international partners. Through these trips students have an eye-opening opportunity to immerse themselves in a new culture and return more globally aware and more open to engaging with others. In order to embed overseas travel across campus we have worked with academic departments to make the trips relevant to courses of study; an example of this was when we took a group of first year Politics students to the United Nations for a private briefing session.

Thanks to our internationalisation funding and event planning support, many student groups are able to contribute to the vibrancy of the World at Lancaster and produce fantastic events that take place throughout campus.

In total, to date, 41 different cultural projects have been planned and executed by student groups.

The Culture Society, hosted Global Village as part of World at Lancaster Week, for which they involved a wide range of other cultural groups who provided traditional foods, demonstrated dances or played traditional music. The event took place in the centre of the University and with music, dance and food created an exciting and vibrant atmosphere.

The Hellenic & Cypriot Society have used the funding and event support to create two lively traditional music events bringing in 250 guests, and took part in a performance at this year’s Christmas Markets that was hugely popular.

The Pakistani society created the Kite Flying Festival for the first time this year and engaged with other students and families on campus and worked with the Indian Society for event support and music.

Thanks is owed to the involvement of individual students and the amazing work by societies for this award.
