Lancaster’s athletes surged into an early overall lead after a number of impressive performances in the opening fixtures.

Lancaster took a 26-19 lead over the hosts with dominant performances in Ultimate Frisbee and Canoe as well as taking two wins in the rowing.

With the main tournament taking place this weekend, it is hoped that that Lancaster’s players can keep their early momentum as they aim for their first away Roses win since 1985.

It was a great weekend for Lancaster’s Ultimate Frisbee players (pictured) who won all but one of their points-scoring matches to accrue 11 of the 13 available points for Lancaster.

Lancaster’s canoeists also had a great weekend, winning both whitewater events and the women’s canoe polo bringing their points hall for the weekend to 12.

And in the rowing – traditionally dominated by York – there were wins for Lancaster in the Men’s Novice 8, Women’s Novice 8 and Men’s Novice 4.

Students’ Union Vice-President (Activities) Jack Walker said: “These amazing performances mean we’re heading to York this weekend with a valuable psychological edge.

“They welcomed us to ‘the gates of hell’ but we ended the first weekend ahead on points and ready to push on for a historic away victory.”
