Union officers were out and about today to talk about big changes planned for universities across the country, as well as urge our members to be part of the Lancaster contingent at the National Free Education Demo in London on November 19.

The Government's Higher Education and Research Bill proposes wide ranging changes including giving top-performing institutions the right to increase tuition fees, placing more responsibility on universities to make themselves accessible to a wider range of students, and centralising research funding.

Members of our Full-Time Officer team spent the day in Alexandra Square talking to students about the key points of the HE Bill and encouraging them buy a £5 bus ticket for return travel to London for the demo.

This month's demonstration, organised by the National Union of Students, calls on the Government to:

  • Scrap the HE Bill, halt the rise in tuition fees and bring back maintenance grants
  • Write off student debt and stop private education companies profiting from student fees

Union president Rhiannon Jones said: "We're going down to the National Demo for Free Education and would love it if you came with us.

"We, with the NUS, want to support students' academic interests now and for future students. This is your chance to be involved."

Book your tickets via our website.

There'll be another chance to talk to us about the HE Bill in Alex Square from 1-3pm on Tuesday November 8.
