According to recent estimates, transport accounts for around a quarter of UK greenhouse gas emissions. So what advocates of sustainability would Green Lancaster be if you saw us chugging along in a diesel devouring vehicle? Enter to the stage one of our newest recruits. Acquired in May, our van has proved pivotal in the running and upsizing of many of Green Lancaster’s events, from the weekly Edible Campus markets, to Exodus on the Road, the latter of which wouldn’t have been possible without it. And what’s more, it’s 100% electric! That’s right, no hybridity in sight. From our calculations, the use of this carbon-neutral chariot compared to a petrol counterpart has been equivalent to planting around 25 new trees on campus. Pretty nifty for a 5-month period I’m sure you’ll agree. And it’s not just climate change the van tackles. Both noise and air pollution has been vastly cut down, contributing to a cleaner, more-relaxing campus for students and staff to enjoy alike.

That’s all good I hear you cry, but what about the practicalities? Well with numerous charging points spread throughout campus, you’re never far from a quick top up, and with a range of 80 miles, this baby’s got stamina. On top of this, the quiet purr of the battery allows users to fully enjoy the velvety melodies of Smooth FM. You can’t argue, it’s a win-win situation.

To find out other ways Green Lancaster are leading the sustainability charge, why not join us on Facebook, Twitter or even sign up for our weekly newsletter if you haven’t already? In the meantime, keeps your eyes peeled for our green machine!
