Democracy Doughnuts

Doughnuts

We’re giving away free donuts at our Central supermarket tomorrow – and it’s all thanks to our new democratic system!

At Freshers Fair you had chance to vote to choose what prize we should giveaway. Options included a prize for an individual, money for a club or society, or a community volunteering day by our officers.

But you voted for a big doughnut giveaway from our Central supermarket, so that's what we're going to do!

Visit Central (near Grizedale College) on Tuesday to claim your free doughnuts!*

Why did we do this?

We gave you chance to vote for a prize to show you the potential of our new democratic systems.

Last term our members approved a new constitution designed to put more power in the hands of our members.

Under the new system, any student can submit their ideas for ways to make the union better. If we think your idea will be popular with other members, we’ll make it happen. But if we think your idea might divide opinion we’ll send it to one of our new student juries to decide.

And if they can’t agree it’ll go a ‘preferendum’ - an all-student vote with a variety of options to choose from. Our Freshers Fair competition was your first chance to experience voting in a preferendum.

Union Vice-President Union Development Sophie Tarif said: “We’re really excited about the new ideas that are coming through and the potential for our new decision-making systems to improve life for students at Lancaster.

“The thing that’s really cool about this competition is that when given the choice of winning an individual prize or something for everyone, our members chose the campus community over themselves. It shows how we’ll be able to work together as a union to improve things for everyone in the years to come.”

*Free donuts will be available while stocks last from Central from 9am on Tuesday October 25. No alternative product or cash alternative will be offered.
